63% of Americans View Trump’s Crypto Profits as Inappropriate

A Reuters/Ipsos poll shows 63% of Americans find Trump's crypto profits inappropriate, with even half of Republicans saying his business interests sway his decisions.

The update

A Reuters/Ipsos poll of 1,166 U.S. adults found 63% consider it inappropriate for President Donald Trump and his family to profit from cryptocurrency while in office. The survey, conducted August 14–17, also found 69% believe his private business interests are influencing his presidential decisions. Notably, about half of Trump’s fellow Republicans said they think he lets business interests sway his decisions, though roughly seven in 10 Republicans still called the crypto dealings appropriate.

Why it matters

This polling data adds hard numbers to a controversy that has followed Trump’s second term. Financial disclosures show he earned over $1.4 billion from ventures like World Liberty Financial and his meme coin. The White House denies any conflicts of interest. The results highlight a widening gap between the president’s base and the broader public on the ethics of political figures profiting from digital assets.

What to watch

Lawmakers are currently wrangling over the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which is scheduled for a cloture vote in September. The partisan divide revealed in this poll could influence how the bill is received and whether it passes with bipartisan support. Additionally, the ongoing scrutiny of Trump’s crypto ventures may lead to further investigations or legislative attempts to rein in conflicts of interest.
