Kirkwood Wins IndyCar’s D.C. Street Race

Kyle Kirkwood dominates Freedom 250, finishing ahead of field on streets of D.C. with Trump in attendance.

The update

Kyle Kirkwood won the IndyCar Freedom 250 on the streets of downtown Washington, D.C., giving the American-born race an American winner. Kirkwood led for 128 of 147 laps and finished 3.09 seconds ahead of Christian Lundgaard. Will Power and Marcus Ericsson, Kirkwood’s teammates with Andretti Global, finished third and fourth. Pole-sitter Álex Palou, who had a chance to clinch the series title, finished 20th after a series of issues including penalties and spins.

Why it matters

The victory marks Kirkwood’s second win of the IndyCar season and significantly impacts the championship standings. Palou’s poor performance reduced his lead from 133 points to 91 with three races remaining. The race, part of America’s 250th birthday celebration, featured political figures with President Trump giving the green flag and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser serving as grand marshal, highlighting IndyCar’s growing cultural and political significance beyond traditional racing markets.

What to watch

How Kirkwood’s momentum affects the championship finale with Palou’s lead now significantly reduced. Whether the unique D.C. street course challenges will become a regular feature on the IndyCar calendar. How Trump’s involvement might influence future sporting events in the nation’s capital.
