Nepal Flood Death Toll Tops 1,000

Death toll crosses 1,000 as rescuers work to reach hundreds trapped in hydropower tunnels after devastating floods

The update

Nepal’s death toll from devastating floods on the border with Tibet has crossed 1,000, according to the country’s disaster agency. More than 3,900 people remain missing, with over 600 workers believed trapped in mud-filled tunnels at hydropower sites along the Trishuli River. International teams from China, Nepal, India, Korea and Australia are involved in the rescue operation, which has included pumping air into tunnels and using explosives to blast through hillside areas.

Why it matters

The disaster highlights growing climate risks in mountain regions and the vulnerability of large-scale infrastructure projects to extreme weather. Nepal’s extensive hydropower development, crucial for the country’s energy needs, has been severely damaged, with at least 11 projects affected. The tragedy underscores how climate change is intensifying natural disasters in the Himalayan region, potentially impacting millions who depend on these water systems.

What to watch

Whether rescue teams will find survivors in the increasingly low-oxygen tunnels, how the death toll may change as operations continue, and what measures Nepal might take to strengthen its infrastructure against climate threats.
