Tsitsipas: Kyrgios Suspension ‘Expected’

Stefanos Tsitsipas says Nick Kyrgios' cocaine suspension was 'pretty much expected' in tennis world

The update

Former world No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas said he wasn’t surprised by Nick Kyrgios’ suspension after testing positive for cocaine. The Australian failed a drugs test at a tournament in Mallorca in June, testing positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine. Kyrgios was suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) from August 4 and later admitted to making a “huge mistake.” Tsitsipas, who defeated Arthur Fils at the US Open, expressed surprise that the suspension came “so late.”

Why it matters

The reaction from a top player like Tsitsipas suggests the tennis world may have been aware of Kyrgios’ situation before the official suspension was announced. This development adds context to the ongoing conversation about drug testing and transparency in professional tennis, particularly regarding how information is shared within the sport’s community.

What to watch

How long Kyrgios’ suspension will last and when he might return to competitive play. The tennis community will also be watching how this situation affects Kyrgios’ career and reputation moving forward, as well as whether more players will comment on their awareness of the situation.
