Double Fine Reclaims Full Game Library Ownership
Double Fine Productions now owns all its game IP and publishing rights after splitting from Xbox.

The update
Double Fine Productions, the studio behind Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, has confirmed it has regained full ownership of its intellectual property and publishing rights for all games released under Microsoft following its split from Xbox. CEO Tim Schafer clarified that while some games may still list Microsoft as the owner, the transfer of rights is complete and will be updated over time.
Why it matters
This return to independence gives Double Fine full control over its game catalog and revenue streams. When fans purchase any Double Fine title, the studio now receives the direct financial benefit, which Schafer noted helps “extend that runway” for future projects. This comes after Xbox’s restructuring that saw Double Fine become independent while retaining its IP and catalog.
What to watch
Watch for Double Fine’s upcoming Amnesia Fortnight 2026, a live game jam with a Kickstarter campaign where backers can vote on which ideas become prototypes. The studio is also working on a significant update for its recent release Kiln, including new maps and game modes, alongside a price drop.
