Syria’s Assad Sentenced to Death in Absentia

Ousted Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad sentenced to death in absentia for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The update

A Syrian court has sentenced ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia after convicting him of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during Syria’s civil war. Assad fled to Moscow with his family after his regime was overthrown in December 2024. The court also sentenced his cousin Atef Najib, the former head of political security in Deraa, to death for crimes including the intentional killing of children under 15 and torture leading to death.

Why it matters

This verdict marks the first major legal action under Syria’s interim government, addressing crimes that occurred during the country’s nearly 14-year conflict. It provides a legal reckoning for victims and establishes a precedent for holding high-ranking officials accountable. The sentencing of Najib, who was detained in January, is seen as a significant step in the transitional justice process.

What to watch

Whether Syria’s new authorities can secure Assad’s extradition from Moscow remains unclear. The sentence is symbolic but may have limited practical impact as Assad remains in exile. The trial sets a precedent for future cases against former regime officials.
