Saudi Arabia shuts oil pipeline after drone attack from Iraq

Saudi Arabia temporarily shut down its critical East-West oil pipeline after a drone attack launched from Iraq caused damage and injuries.

The update

Saudi Arabia has temporarily closed its critical East-West oil pipeline after it was attacked by drones launched from Iraq. The drones struck the pipeline in the Riyadh and Medina regions, causing injuries and damage. Satellite images showed smoke billowing near the pipeline. Iraq has removed a military commander and launched an investigation after confirming the attack originated from its territory.

Why it matters

The East-West pipeline is a vital 1,200km conduit that has become increasingly important for Saudi Arabia’s oil exports since the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The pipeline carries 4-5% of global oil supply and connects Saudi Arabia’s Abqaiq oilfield to the Yanbu port on the Red Sea. Its closure forces rerouting of crude exports and raises concerns about energy security in the region.

What to watch

Watch for updates on the investigation into who launched the drones from Iraq’s Maysan province. Monitor whether Saudi Arabia will follow through on its statement reserving the right to take protective measures. Track the status of the pipeline repairs and when exports will resume. Also watch for potential escalation as Saudi Arabia has previously accused Iranian-backed Iraqi militias of targeting its oil infrastructure.
