Glacier Collapse Likely Cause of Deadly Nepal-Tibet Floods

Scientists point to collapsed glacier as cause of deadly Nepal-Tibet floods, revealing climate change's impact on world's 'third pole'.

The update

Preliminary investigations have identified a collapsed glacier as the likely cause of the devastating flash floods on the Nepal-Tibet border that killed at least 469 people. Initial reports suggested an earthquake triggered a landslide, but scientists now believe a glacial collapse caused the disaster. The collapse occurred near the Langtang Lirung peak, approximately 15km west of the flood site, with the glacier disintegrating and traveling downstream.

Why it matters

The event highlights the accelerating pace of glacial melt in the Himalayas, a region often called the world’s ‘third pole’ due to its vast ice reserves. The collapse generated a powerful impact registering magnitude 5.2, sending water levels in rivers downstream rising by seven to nine meters within 30 minutes. This powerful surge carried water, sediment and large boulders, destroying several water monitoring stations in its path.

What to watch

Scientists are analyzing satellite imagery to better understand the specific glacier collapse mechanism and how such events might be predicted. Communities downstream remain vulnerable as glacial melt continues to accelerate in the region, with experts warning that similar disasters could become more frequent.
