Germany Accuses Russia of Drone Attack at Leipzig Airport

Germany says Russia is responsible for a failed drone attack at Leipzig airport, near Ukrainian cargo planes.

The update

German authorities have formally accused Russia of being behind a failed drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany on August 4. The device, which carried an explosive, was discovered near cargo planes operated by Ukraine. It failed to detonate due to a faulty trigger, but investigators suspect a second drone may have collided with a nearby aircraft. A third drone was reportedly found at the airport 10 days later.

Why it matters

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the incident as part of a “well-established pattern of Russian hybrid operations in Europe.” This is the first time Germany has publicly attributed a specific sabotage attempt on its soil to Russia since the start of the Ukraine war.

What to watch

Germany has announced closing the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House cultural center in Berlin. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul also vowed tighter entry controls for Russian nationals and increased pressure on Russia’s “shadow fleet” of tankers used to evade sanctions. Russia has denied the accusation, with spokesperson Maria Zakharova saying Moscow would respond in a “mirror-image” fashion. The EU and NATO have pledged support for Germany.
