French Court Links Breast Cancer to Flight Work

French court recognizes breast cancer as occupational disease for flight attendant exposed to cosmic radiation, night work, and passive smoking.

The update

A French court has recognized breast cancer as an occupational disease for a former Air France flight attendant, marking the first time cosmic radiation has been officially linked to cancer in aviation workers. Sophie Lainault, who worked for the airline from 1989 to 2019, accumulated over 12,600 flight hours, with more than half at night. The court identified three contributing factors: cosmic radiation, prolonged night work, and passive smoking (which was permitted on Air France flights until 2000).

Why it matters

This ruling establishes a legal precedent that could enable thousands of flight attendants and pilots worldwide to seek similar recognition of occupational cancers. The decision comes as studies show flight crew face higher radiation-related cancer death rates than many other professions, including those working with non-cosmic radiation. For Lainault, the ruling allows early retirement and full reimbursement for further treatment.

What to watch

Will other airlines and countries adopt similar occupational disease recognition for flight crew? How will airlines respond to increased liability concerns? Will scientific research further clarify the exact relationship between cosmic radiation exposure and cancer risk?
