20 Million Children Face Online Sexual Abuse

UNICEF report reveals 20 million children aged 12-17 face online sexual abuse, with social platforms facilitating 60% of cases.

The Update

UNICEF reports that approximately 20 million children aged 12 to 17—one in five across 21 countries—were sexually exploited by perpetrators using technology such as social media. The study found that 15 million children were exposed to unwanted sexual content, nine million were asked to engage in sexual conversations against their will, and four million had sexual images of themselves shared without consent.

Why It Matters

This digital abuse crisis affects children in spaces where they learn, play, and socialize. Nearly 60% of exploitation occurred on social media platforms, with 14% happening in online games. Children who experienced this abuse were four times more likely to report suicidal thoughts or behaviors, highlighting the severe mental health consequences.

What to Watch

Watch for how tech platforms respond to these findings and whether new regulations will be implemented to protect young users. UNICEF is calling for safer platforms and stronger laws, but enforcement remains a challenge. The actual scale of the problem may be larger, as less than 1% of incidents were reported to authorities.
