Egypt Reopens Embassy Building in Tripoli After 12 Years in Regional Shift
Egypt reopened its historic Tripoli embassy after 12 years, rebalancing toward Libya's western government while raising concerns over Turkey's maritime deal with Libya.

The update
Egypt reopened its historic embassy building in Tripoli on Saturday, 12 years after closing it in January 2014 following the kidnapping of five embassy staff. Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty inaugurated the building and met Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah of Libya’s internationally recognised Government of National Unity. Talks covered trade, energy, gas pipelines and refining Libyan crude in Egypt, and Egypt’s concerns over Libya’s maritime deal with Turkiye.
Why it matters
The reopening signals a shift by Cairo, which has long backed Khalifa Haftar, whose forces dominate eastern Libya, where a rival government is based. Engaging Tripoli directly rebalances Egypt’s approach as Libyan rivals pursue a unity roadmap. The 2019 maritime agreement, ratified by Libya’s eastern parliament on October 20, draws an eastern Mediterranean boundary that Egypt, Greece and Cyprus oppose and that the European Union says infringes other countries’ rights.
What to watch
Officials from Egypt and Libya are expected to discuss their competing maritime maps at their next meeting. Libya’s acting oil minister is also due in Cairo for further energy talks. Whether Cairo’s engagement with both Libyan sides supports the election roadmap, and how Haftar’s eastern authorities respond, will show if the shift endures.
