Thai nationals arrested for smuggling parrot eggs in South Africa

Thai nationals arrested for smuggling parrot eggs at Johannesburg airport; eggs rescued and some have hatched.

The update

South African authorities have arrested two Thai nationals for allegedly attempting to smuggle endangered parrot eggs out of the country. A 50-year-old man was detained at OR Tambo International Airport on August 20 after officials found 50 bird eggs concealed in a homemade incubator carried in his hand luggage. A separate incident occurred on July 16 when a 23-year-old Thai national was arrested at the same airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle 418 parrot eggs in two homemade incubator bags.

Why it matters

The eggs are believed to belong to parrot species protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). South Africa’s environment ministry states that the illegal collection and trafficking of these eggs pose a serious threat to wild bird populations and animal welfare. The ministry reports that several of the rescued eggs have successfully hatched, with chicks now receiving intensive veterinary care at the National Zoological Garden in Pretoria.

What to watch

Authorities are continuing investigations into the smuggling networks. The specific parrot species involved has not been publicly identified. The department notes that smugglers often use improvised incubation devices, which compromise the viability of the eggs and endanger the welfare of developing embryos. If convicted, suspects face a fine of up to 10 million rand or up to 10 years in prison.
