Bitcoin’s First Quantum-Safe Transaction Mined

Bitcoin just completed its first quantum-safe transaction on the mainnet, a technical milestone that could protect funds without a network fork.

The update

Bitcoin has completed its first experimental transaction designed to be resistant to future quantum computing attacks. The transaction was mined on the mainnet using a method developed by Starkware researchers, known as Quantum-Safe Bitcoin (QSB). This approach allows users to protect their holdings without requiring a change to Bitcoin’s core consensus rules or a network fork.

Why it matters

Current Bitcoin security relies on elliptic-curve cryptography, which a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could theoretically break to derive private keys. The successful QSB transaction demonstrates a way to secure funds now, while the industry waits for a long-term protocol upgrade. This provides a potential interim defense for assets vulnerable to future quantum threats.

What to watch

Starkware has stated that a soft fork remains its preferred long-term solution. The current method is experimental and computationally expensive, taking hours to generate a single transaction. The broader crypto industry is currently assessing which Bitcoin holdings might be most exposed to quantum attacks as research on the threat evolves.
