Judge Denies Maxwell’s Bid to Overturn Conviction

Judge rejects Maxwell's claims that newly released Epstein files could help overturn her conviction.

The update

A US federal judge has rejected Ghislaine Maxwell’s bid to throw out her five felony convictions for sex trafficking, calling her claims “frivolous” and “meritless.” Judge Paul Engelmayer, who did not preside over Maxwell’s original 2021 trial, dismissed her 67-page petition as “lengthy and rambling.” Maxwell had argued that newly released Epstein files, made public under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, supported her claims that her constitutional rights were violated during her trial and sentencing. However, the judge found that the material actually worked against her, stating that “far from exculpating her, it incriminates her or reinforces the correctness of the legal rulings Maxwell challenges.”

Why it matters

This ruling effectively ends Maxwell’s latest legal effort to challenge her conviction. The 64-year-old is currently serving a 20-year sentence for helping Jeffrey Epstein recruit and sexually abuse underage girls. With the Supreme Court already having declined to hear a further appeal last October, this rejection significantly reduces the likelihood of her conviction being overturned in the near future.

What to watch

Whether Maxwell will attempt further appeals despite the judge’s warning that they “would not be taken in good faith.” The potential impact of the released Epstein files on other related investigations or cases. Maxwell’s eligibility for release in 2037 remains unchanged by this ruling.
