NASA Abandons Swift Observatory Rescue

NASA calls off robotic rescue mission for Swift gamma-ray observatory, which will now reenter Earth's atmosphere later this year.

The update

NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies have abandoned their robotic mission to rescue the Swift gamma-ray observatory. The Link rescue satellite, launched July 3, experienced ongoing attitude control issues that prevented it from completing its mission to capture Swift and boost its orbit. Despite the spacecraft remaining operational, it cannot fulfill its intended purpose of extending the observatory’s life.

Why it matters

The Swift observatory, launched in 2004, has been crucial for studying gamma-ray bursts and monitoring sudden cosmic events. Without intervention, it will reenter Earth’s atmosphere and burn up later this year, ending its scientific contributions. The mission was a high-risk, high-reward attempt to extend the telescope’s life by a decade, completed with an unusually tight nine-month development timeline.

What to watch

While the rescue is off, the Link satellite will still attempt to rendezvous with Swift to gather data for future satellite servicing missions. NASA says it will prioritize finding new options to rapidly respond to cosmic events, though current missions will fill the gap in the meantime. The agency will assess what technical milestones can still be achieved with the Link spacecraft.
