British Newlyweds Killed in Greek Helicopter Crash

A British couple on their honeymoon were killed in a Greek helicopter crash on the island of Sifnos.

The update

A privately chartered Bell 206 helicopter crashed on the Greek island of Sifnos on Monday, killing the pilot and two British passengers. The couple, identified as newlyweds Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert, were reportedly moments away from landing when the aircraft went down just meters from a helipad. Local witnesses described hearing a strange engine noise before the crash, which left little of the aircraft remaining at the scene.

Why it matters

The incident raises concerns about the safety of private aviation tourism in popular Mediterranean destinations. While Greece is a hub for helicopter tourism, this tragedy highlights the potential risks associated with chartered flights, particularly regarding mechanical reliability and pilot experience. Authorities are currently investigating the cause, with a focus on potential mechanical failure.

What to watch

Authorities are expected to release more details on the investigation, including the findings of the Greek aviation safety authority. The focus will likely be on whether the crash was caused by a mechanical fault or another factor. Additionally, the incident may prompt a review of safety protocols for private helicopter tours in tourist areas.
