Nneka Ogwumike to retire after 2026 season

Nneka Ogwumike, the WNBA star and players' union president, announced she will retire at the end of the 2026 season.

The update

Nneka Ogwumike, the Los Angeles Sparks star and president of the WNBA Players Association, announced she will retire at the conclusion of the 2026 season. Ogwumike, an 11-time All-Star, made the decision during training camp this spring after signing a one-year deal to return to the Sparks. She cited a desire to find peace and fulfillment after 15 seasons in the league.

Why it matters

Ogwumike is widely considered a first-ballot Hall of Famer and the franchise’s all-time leader in scoring, field goals made, steals, and double-doubles. As players’ union president, she played a central role in negotiating the league’s recent collective bargaining agreement, which secured significant improvements for player compensation and benefits.

What to watch

The Sparks will need to adjust their roster strategy for the 2026 season to fill the void left by Ogwumike’s absence. Additionally, the league will continue to monitor the long-term impact of her retirement on the WNBA’s growth and the players’ union’s future initiatives.
