Mladić, ‘Butcher of Bosnia,’ dies at 84

Convicted Bosnian Serb war criminal Ratko Mladić has died in a UN prison at The Hague at age 84, where he was serving a life sentence.

The update

Ratko Mladić, the former Bosnian Serb military leader convicted of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity during the 1992-95 Bosnian war, has died in a UN prison at The Hague at age 84. He was serving a life sentence imposed in 2017, which was upheld on appeal in 2021. Mladić had been receiving palliative care in the hospital of the UN detention facility.

Why it matters

Mladić’s death marks the end of an era for war crimes prosecution related to the Yugoslav wars. Known as the “Butcher of Bosnia,” he commanded forces responsible for some of the most brutal atrocities in Europe since World War II, including the siege of Sarajevo and the 1995 Srebrenica massacre of 8,000 Bosniak men and boys. His death comes amid ongoing efforts at reconciliation in a region still scarred by ethnic divisions.

What to watch

How Mladić’s death might affect ongoing reconciliation efforts in Bosnia and the legacy of international war crimes tribunals. Survivors and victims’ families may have varied reactions to the news, as his death eliminates the possibility of further legal proceedings while closing a significant chapter in the pursuit of justice for wartime atrocities.
