Kenyan Cult Leader Paul Mackenzie Sentenced to 200 Years for Murdering 191 People

A Kenyan court sentenced cult leader Paul Mackenzie to 200 years for murdering 190 children and one adult ordered to starve in Shakahola forest.

The update

A court in Mombasa on Friday sentenced Paul Mackenzie to 200 years in prison for the murder of 190 children and one adult. The term comprises 100 years for murder by starvation and 100 years by direct homicide, to run consecutively. Mackenzie ordered followers of his Good News International Church to starve themselves and their children to death so they could meet Jesus. Twenty-eight accomplices received prison terms of up to 160 years. All were convicted last month and had denied forcing victims to die.

Why it matters

More than 400 bodies were found in shallow graves in Shakahola forest after Mackenzie was arrested in 2023, in what the BBC described as one of the world’s deadliest episodes of cult activity. Post-mortem results showed most victims had starved, while others died from suffocation, strangulation or head injuries. The case shocked Kenya, drew international attention and exposed repeated failures by local officials to act on warnings about the church.

What to watch

Mackenzie also faces separate manslaughter and terrorism charges, which he denies. Attention will also stay on whether Kenya tightens oversight of religious organisations, as families of victims and investigators have demanded since the graves were uncovered in Shakahola forest.
