A drone carrying explosives was found at a German airport, and a second object collided with a cargo plane mid-air, raising concerns about airport security.
The update
Police at Leipzig/Halle Airport in eastern Germany removed the detonator from a drone carrying an explosive device. The drone was spotted by an employee near parked Ukrainian cargo planes. A second unidentified object also collided with a cargo aircraft near the same airport, which landed in Hanover with minor damage. The detonator was removed, and police later carried out a controlled explosion. Flights on the northern runway resumed at 01:55 GMT, while the southern runway remains closed.

The incident occurred at a hub used by the German military, NATO allies, and Ukrainian carrier Antonov Airlines. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the situation as a “professional, hybrid threat scenario” that does not point to an amateurish approach. He suggested the investigation may point to a possible “competition” that “may also involve foreign powers.” The incident adds to a series of unauthorised drone flights over military bases, airports, and logistics companies in Germany since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.
What to watch
Authorities have not named any suspects. Ukraine’s Ambassador to Germany suggested the involvement of Russia, a claim Moscow has denied. Aviation and security experts are monitoring whether this marks a new level of threat to civil aviation infrastructure in Europe.
