Ring’s TAKE Encryption Sets New Home Security Standard

Ring's TAKE encryption becomes default worldwide, offering privacy while maintaining cloud features like Smart Alerts.

The update

Ring has introduced TAKE (Throw Away the Key Encryption) as the new default encryption standard for all its customers worldwide. The company says this approach delivers the full Ring experience while leaving users with the keys and full control of their videos. TAKE will roll out in phases starting in September, though end-to-end encryption will remain an optional setting for users who prefer it.

Why it matters

TAKE represents a significant shift in how home security devices handle privacy and functionality. Unlike traditional end-to-end encryption, which can restrict certain features, TAKE uses rotating encryption keys temporarily stored in the cloud that are deleted within 24 hours. This approach allows Ring to maintain intelligent features like Smart Alerts while promising users greater control over their video data. The standard is built on Messaging Layer Security (MLS), an open messaging standard developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force.

What to watch

Whether competitors adopt this new standard or develop their own approaches. How users respond to having TAKE as the default setting versus end-to-end encryption. The long-term implications for privacy standards in the smart home industry as this technology evolves.
