Microsoft, Google Back $100M+ AI Science Push

Microsoft commits $60M, Google $40M to DOE's Genesis Mission for AI-powered scientific breakthroughs.

The update

Microsoft has announced a $60 million investment in the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, a national effort to double American scientific productivity within a decade through AI integration. The investment includes $40 million in Azure compute and AI credits over three years, plus $20 million in solution engineering services. Google DeepMind has separately committed $40 million in AI tokens and cloud credits to support the mission.

Why it matters

The Genesis Mission brings together DOE’s 17 National Laboratories, experimental facilities, scientific data, and next-generation computing into a unified platform. This collaboration between government and tech giants represents a significant investment in using AI to solve complex scientific challenges, potentially accelerating breakthroughs in fields from fusion energy to materials science.

What to watch

How the newly announced SPARK coordination hub will facilitate collaboration between researchers and tech partners. What specific scientific problems will be prioritized with this increased computing power. How the integration of AI tools like AlphaFold and Gemini for Government will transform the research process at national laboratories.
