ChatGPT’s Text Access Raises Privacy Concerns

OpenAI's new feature allows ChatGPT to access and interact with iMessages, raising privacy concerns for users.

The update

OpenAI has introduced a new feature called Apple Messages Plugin that allows ChatGPT to read and write iMessages on behalf of users. Currently available only to ChatGPT Work and Codex users on Mac desktops, the feature requires explicit user permission before activation. OpenAI states that messages won’t be stored and the plugin will run locally on the user’s Mac rather than on OpenAI’s servers.

Why it matters

This integration represents a deeper penetration of AI into personal communications, potentially raising privacy concerns despite OpenAI’s assurances. The feature comes amid strained relations between OpenAI and Apple, with Apple having sued OpenAI in July 2026 over alleged trade secret theft. The timing also follows increased scrutiny of OpenAI’s data practices, including a 295% jump in US ChatGPT app uninstalls after OpenAI’s February 2026 agreement with the US Department of Defense.

What to watch

How users respond to this level of AI integration in private communications, whether Apple will address the privacy implications, and if OpenAI will expand this feature to mobile devices. It remains unclear how many users actually want their chatbot to have access to their personal messages.
