The update

Apple is rolling out a new device leasing program called “Apple Upgrade” in partnership with the “buy now, pay later” service Klarna. The program is available for iPhones, Apple Watches, Macs, and iPads in the United States through the Apple Store online, app, and retail locations. Customers can choose one- or two-year leases for iPhones and Apple Watches, and two- or three-year leases for Macs and iPads.

Why it matters

This move comes as Apple has faced supply chain issues and recently raised prices on some devices. The leasing option provides an alternative to traditional purchases and Apple’s previous financing plans. It allows users to lower monthly costs through trade-ins and earn 3% Daily Cash back on Apple Card payments.

What to watch

Apple is discontinuing its existing in-house financing programs in the U.S. with this launch. The program replaces the iPhone Upgrade Program and iPhone Payments. Customers will need to be approved via a soft credit check to enroll.
