Anthropic’s New Standard Bridges AI and Physical Devices

Anthropic launches a hardware standard that lets AI agents control physical devices.

The update

Anthropic has introduced a new framework called the Model Hardware Standard (MHS). This is a set of standardized drivers designed to let AI agents easily interface with and control physical devices. The goal is to create a common language for hardware, allowing devices to communicate with each other and AI models without needing custom “translator” programs. The company positions this as a research preview, initially aimed at streamlining scientific experiments.

Why it matters

This development addresses a major limitation in current AI: its confinement to digital environments. By enabling agents to interact with the physical world, Anthropic is opening the door to fully automated scientific discovery and manufacturing. The standard could reduce the complex setup time for experiments from weeks or months to hours or minutes. It also allows AI to reason through steps, update parameters in real time, and recover from hardware errors autonomously.

What to watch

Anthropic says it will work with trusted partners to determine safety measures before making the standard generally available. While the company argues that built-in guardrails will prevent misuse, the ability for AI to control physical systems introduces new risks. The next steps will involve seeing how widely this standard is adopted by researchers and manufacturers and how effectively safety protocols are implemented in real-world scenarios.
