Ravens’ Brigance dies after 19-year ALS fight

Ravens icon O.J. Brigance, who won a Super Bowl and inspired many with his 19-year ALS battle, has died at 56.

The update

O.J. Brigance, a former Baltimore Ravens linebacker and the team’s longtime adviser in player engagement, has died 19 years after being diagnosed with ALS. He was 56. The Ravens announced Brigance’s death, with owner Steve Bisciotti calling him a “beloved legend, mentor and man to everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.” Brigance won a Super Bowl with Baltimore in 2000 and served as an inspiration to the organization for nearly two decades with his determination to fight the disease and surpass his initial prognosis.

Why it matters

Brigance’s journey with ALS, which he was diagnosed with in 2007 at age 37, became a powerful story of resilience. Despite being told he had two to five years to live, he remained a constant presence at the team facility, known for his infectious smile and determination. His impact extended beyond football, as former teammates like Ray Lewis and Ed Reed credited him with motivating their careers. Brigance’s legacy includes his role in raising awareness about ALS and demonstrating how to face adversity with grace and strength.

What to watch

The Ravens organization may honor Brigance with tributes during upcoming games. His foundation, which supports ALS research and patient care, will likely see increased attention following his passing. The team’s response could include establishing a permanent memorial or continuing his advocacy work in his name.
