The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed second baseman Ketel Marte on the restricted list after he failed to show up for Monday night’s game against the Boston Red Sox, despite traveling with the team to Boston. In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks recalled infielder Jose Fernandez from Triple-A.
Why it matters
The restricted list is typically used for personal, legal or non-baseball reasons, and players on the list don’t get paid and don’t accrue MLB service time until they’re returned to the roster. Marte, a three-time All-Star, is in the midst of a six-year, $105 million contract with Arizona through at least 2030.
