Ben White Returns to England Squad After Four-Year Absence — Tuchel Says Defender Must “Clear the Air”

Arsenal defender Ben White has been recalled to the England squad for the first time since 2022, but head coach Thomas Tuchel says the 28-year-old must “clear the air” with teammates following his controversial World Cup exit.
White last played for England in March 2022 and was selected for the Qatar World Cup later that year. However, he left the camp for “personal reasons” after a disagreement with then-assistant manager Steve Holland. He subsequently made himself “unavailable for selection” throughout former manager Gareth Southgate’s remaining tenure, which ended after Euro 2024.
What Happened
Thomas Tuchel announced White’s return ahead of England’s upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley — the final international break before the German boss names his World Cup squad for the tournament in the USA, Mexico, and Canada this summer.
“I think everyone deserves a second chance,” Tuchel said when asked about White’s recall. “I don’t know exactly what happened. I was not 100% interested in that as I wanted to open a new page.”
The England manager revealed that White’s response to the call-up was immediate and emotional. “Once I asked Ben if he would be ready to play for me and for England, he straight away, and without hesitation, said he would love that and he was desperate to come back.”
However, Tuchel made clear that White must address unresolved tensions from 2022. “I think it’s necessary he clears the air with teammates and I think he will when players come back, who were in the World Cup with him.”
Why It Matters
White’s return represents a significant moment for both player and country. The versatile defender, who can play right-back and centre-back, earned his recall after strong performances for Arsenal in their Carabao Cup run to the final and Champions League campaign, despite starting just 15 times in the Premier League this season.
His inclusion comes at the expense of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has been omitted from Tuchel’s squad since June 2024. “It’s just a choice. A sporting choice. A difficult choice and maybe a hard choice — and maybe to a certain degree unfair, but these choices have to be made,” Tuchel explained.
The decision highlights the intense competition for England’s defensive positions ahead of the World Cup, with Tuchel favoring players who have impressed in recent camps, including Tino Livramento and Djed Spence.
White’s recall was sealed by a late injury to Liverpool’s Jarrell Quansah. Tuchel said White’s response “came within seconds, and was very euphoric, and very positive and he was emotional about it, which shows me that he really means it.”
What’s Next
England face Uruguay on Friday, March 27 at 19:45 GMT, followed by Japan on Tuesday, April 1 at the same time. Tuchel has named a 35-man squad for the matches, with 11 players — including captain Harry Kane and Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice — joining camp on Saturday after being given rest time.
White will have two matches to prove he deserves a spot on the plane to North America this summer. His performances and ability to reconcile with teammates who were present during the Qatar controversy will be closely watched.
Beyond White’s return, Tuchel also issued a warning to Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, who has returned to the squad after missing three camps due to a groin injury. “We have more evidence without him than with him, so the pressure is on him,” Tuchel said, noting the competition for Palmer’s preferred number 10 position from Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, and Phil Foden.
