Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia Rescheduled to December 2027 After Attacks on Host Country

The Asian Football Confederation has moved the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia from January to December, citing regional attacks, logistical problems and travel disruption.

The update

The Asian Football Confederation has rescheduled the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, moving the 24-team tournament from 7 January to 5 February 2027 to 23 December 2027 to 21 January 2028. The AFC said the decision followed extensive discussions with the local organising committee and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, citing exceptional circumstances in the region, substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions.

Why it matters

Saudi Arabia has repeatedly come under attack from Yemen’s Houthis since September, with Riyadh among the cities hit. In October, a missile attack on Riyadh’s airport killed 13 people and wounded more than 300, according to the BBC. Several participating nations had expressed concerns about security, and other events in Saudi Arabia, including the Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition in Riyadh, have recently been cancelled.

What to watch

The AFC will present the new dates to FIFA for approval. Attention will now turn to whether the security situation allows the tournament to proceed as rescheduled, and how national teams and leagues adjust calendars for a championship now placed in the middle of the European club season.
