Webb Captures Lion Nebula Details

Webb's infrared vision reveals new details in the Lion Nebula, advancing our understanding of planetary nebulae formation.

The update

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has captured new images of NGC 2392, nicknamed the Lion Nebula. The nebula’s distinctive “mane” is clear and detailed in these high-resolution infrared images, released on Aug. 10, 2026. This view builds on NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope observations from 2000, which previously revealed the nebula’s lion face-shaped structure and hazy, comet-shaped “mane” in visible light.

Why it matters

Webb’s infrared vision highlights features like compact clumps of dust and a haze of ionized gas that were not visible in earlier visible-light views. These observations provide scientists with new insights into planetary nebulae formation and the death process of stars. The source of these constant changes and the nebula’s distinct appearance is located at the center: the remains of a dying star, which appears as the nebula’s “button nose.”

What to watch

Scientists will continue analyzing these images to understand how the nebula’s components continue to evolve. The thousands of years of cosmic history captured in these images may reveal more about stellar life cycles and the distribution of elements in space.
