NASA’s Roman Telescope Ready to Hunt Alien Worlds

NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is now enclosed in its Falcon Heavy fairing and ready for launch, targeting Aug. 30 liftoff.

The update

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has been enclosed inside the protective fairing of its SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The 43-foot-tall fairing shields the observatory from extreme conditions during launch and will separate from the rocket a few minutes after liftoff.

Why it matters

The Roman Space Telescope represents NASA’s next-generation observatory designed to explore some of the universe’s biggest mysteries. With a field of view at least 100 times larger than Hubble’s, Roman will help scientists investigate dark energy and dark matter, discover and characterize exoplanets, map billions of galaxies, study black holes, and explore objects from our solar system.

What to watch

Launch is currently scheduled for no earlier than 7:26 a.m. EDT on Sunday, Aug. 30, from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center. A Launch Readiness Review will be held on Friday, Aug. 28, to confirm the launch timeline. Once operational, Roman is expected to discover thousands of exoplanets while simultaneously helping scientists understand the universe’s accelerating expansion.
