Iran Rejects Trump’s Claim on Strait of Hormuz

Iran says it will not allow the U.S. to declare the Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory.

The update

Iran has firmly rejected President Trump’s assertion that he could declare the Strait of Hormuz a “territory of the United States.” In a post on X, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that the opening and closure of the waterway will remain under Iran’s control. This comes after President Trump wrote on Truth Social that he intends to “keep” the Strait of Hormuz, claiming the U.S. has “total control” over it.

Why it matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies, with roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil passing through it daily. A dispute over who controls this waterway could lead to shipping disruptions, higher energy prices, and a broader escalation in tensions between the two nations.

What to watch

Watch for statements from the U.S. State Department on the legal basis of Trump’s claim. Also, monitor shipping data for any reduction in vessel traffic through the Strait, which would indicate a de facto blockade.
