Double Fine regains full IP rights after Xbox split

Double Fine confirms it now owns all its games and publishing rights after leaving Xbox.

The update

Double Fine Productions has confirmed that it has regained the intellectual property and publishing rights for all of its games released under Microsoft. CEO Tim Schafer stated during a recent appearance that the transfer of ownership is complete, though some listings may still show Microsoft for the time being.

Why it matters

This move secures the studio’s long-term creative and financial independence. By retaining full ownership, Double Fine can control how its back catalog is managed and monetized. The studio has also announced it is reviving its Amnesia Fortnight game jam as a Kickstarter campaign, aiming to fund its next projects through direct community support.

What to watch

Players should monitor how the studio handles its existing game library and whether it plans to release new content or remasters. The upcoming Kickstarter for Amnesia Fortnight will be a key indicator of the studio’s immediate financial needs and creative direction.
