Russell Brand Found Guilty of Rape and Sexual Assault by UK Court

A London jury has convicted Russell Brand of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault, and a judge has warned the former broadcaster he faces a significant prison term when sentenced on Monday.

The update

A jury at Southwark Crown Court in London convicted Russell Brand, 51, on Thursday of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault, after a four-week trial. He was acquitted of two further rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. Mr Justice Bennathan remanded Brand in custody and told him he faces a significant custodial term. He will be sentenced on Monday.

Why it matters

The case covered incidents between 1999 and 2009, as Brand rose from stand-up comedy to television and Hollywood fame. Six women, who did not know each other and have lifelong anonymity, gave evidence; they came forward after a 2023 television documentary and newspaper investigations reported allegations against him. Prosecutors called Brand a ruthless predator, while London’s Metropolitan Police said he “used his influence, status and fame to exploit and sexually offend against women,” praising the complainants’ courage. Brand had denied the charges, saying encounters were consensual or allegations fabricated.

What to watch

Sentencing on Monday will set the length of Brand’s prison term. He maintains his denials, so an appeal is possible. Al Jazeera also reports that Brand faces separate, additional rape and sexual assault charges, to which he has pleaded not guilty; those proceedings could extend the case well beyond Monday’s sentencing.
