Greenland Parliament Ratifies Security Agreement With US and Denmark
Greenland's parliament ratified a US-Denmark security agreement 16-0, expanding the American military presence in the Arctic while keeping the island under Danish control.

The update
Greenland’s parliament on Tuesday ratified a trilateral security and military-access agreement with the United States and Denmark, approving it 16-0 with seven abstentions. The agreement was signed in September by US President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. It allows an expanded US military presence, including work at the Pituffik Space Base, and paves the way for additional US bases.
Why it matters
The vote follows months of tension after Trump repeatedly threatened earlier this year to take control of the self-governing Danish territory, rattling Denmark and other NATO allies. The deal keeps Greenland under Danish control, reaffirms Greenlanders’ right to self-determination, and would still apply if the island chose independence. Greenlandic Foreign Minister Mute Egede said peace and stability could no longer be taken for granted.
What to watch
Denmark’s parliament must still ratify the agreement, with a vote scheduled for November 19 in Copenhagen. No approval is required from the US Senate, and attention will turn to how quickly the expanded US presence in the Arctic and North Atlantic takes shape.
