Iran Warns Renewed War With US Could Outlast Previous Conflict

Iran's army said a renewed war with the United States could last longer than the previous conflict and Washington would not dictate its end.

The update

Iran’s army spokesman Mohammad Akraminia said on Sunday that a potential future war with the United States could last longer than the previous conflict, and that the American president would not dictate the timing or conditions of its conclusion, according to Iranian state television. His remarks followed President Donald Trump’s comments that the United States still had to “take care of” one or two sites in Iran, which he said could be done in 10 minutes, mentioning Pickaxe Mountain, a suspected underground nuclear complex.

Why it matters

The exchange follows the war’s most intense phase, which began on February 28 with US and Israeli strikes on Iran, followed by Iranian missile and drone attacks across the region. Hossein Mohebbi, a spokesman for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said a conflict with America would have no geographical limitations. At the same time, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said talks with mediators over a two-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz were ongoing.

What to watch

Trump has since repeated that the war will end “very soon, one way or the other,” urging Tehran to make a deal. Watch whether the mediated Hormuz proposal moves forward, and whether either side moves from warnings to renewed strikes.
