Congo Ebola Deaths Top 5,000 as Outbreak Spreads Across Borders
Deaths in DR Congo's Ebola outbreak have passed 5,000, with cases now confirmed in Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda.

The update
Deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ebola outbreak have topped 5,000, according to the latest Congolese Ministry of Health data reported Saturday. The virus has killed 5,026 people out of 10,351 infected — a lethality rate of nearly 50% — since the outbreak was declared in mid-May. The outbreak is driven by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, is spread across eight of Congo’s 26 provinces, and has now crossed borders: Kenya has confirmed eight cases and two deaths, Nigeria one case, and Uganda recorded cases earlier in the outbreak. About 2,788 people have recovered, but roughly a third of deaths are occurring outside treatment centres, before patients are ever tested.
Why it matters
This is already the second-deadliest Ebola outbreak in history, behind only the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic that killed more than 11,000 people. There are no approved vaccines or treatments for the Bundibugyo species, and it is the first Ebola outbreak recorded across three African regions. Deaths in the community rather than in treatment centres are a warning sign for containment, because each one risks further unmonitored transmission. Neighbouring governments are already reacting, with travel restrictions beginning to spread.
What to watch
Whether case growth slows as response teams reach the worst-hit zones in Ituri and North Kivu; any further confirmed cases outside Congo; additional travel restrictions from regional governments; and whether experimental vaccines or treatments for the Bundibugyo species are fast-tracked for emergency use.
