Sweden’s Election Too Close to Call

Sweden's election remains too close to call with left-wing bloc marginally ahead as vote count continues.

The update

Sweden’s general election remains too close to call with the left-wing opposition bloc marginally ahead as the vote count continues. With more than 90% of ballots processed, the left-wing bloc leads by approximately 20,000 votes, according to partial counts by Sweden’s election authority. Projections show the Social Democrats’ Magdalena Andersson would likely finish with a three-seat majority over the rival four-party coalition led by current conservative Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

Why it matters

The result could reshape Swedish politics and potentially affect the country’s stance on EU integration and immigration policies. Both major blocs feature four parties each, meaning coalition and minority governments are relatively common. The hard-right Sweden Democrats, which have neo-Nazi roots, had been shunned for years until 2022 when it became the country’s second largest party after campaigning on violent crime and immigration.

What to watch

Will the final vote count confirm the left-wing bloc’s narrow lead? How will the government formation process unfold given the razor-thin margin? Will the Sweden Democrats still be promised cabinet positions in a potential conservative government, as Kristersson has previously indicated?
