Saudi Arabia Eyes Mega-Merger of EA and Savvy Games

Saudi Arabia's PIF reportedly wants to combine EA with its Savvy Games Group, potentially uniting major franchises.

The update

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is reportedly exploring a merger between its gaming subsidiary, Savvy Games Group, and Electronic Arts (EA). This move would bring together EA’s portfolio of sports titles, including EA FC, with Savvy’s mobile gaming assets like Pokémon Go. The reported merger aims to “ensure better coordination between assets” according to unnamed sources familiar with the matter.

Why it matters

Savvy already owns Scopely, the developer behind Pokémon Go, and has stakes in major publishers like Capcom and Nintendo. A merger would create a massive gaming powerhouse under one corporate umbrella, potentially reshaping competition and strategy in the global gaming market. This comes after EA’s $55bn leveraged buyout by PIF was finalized earlier this year.

What to watch

Official confirmation from EA or the PIF is still pending. The deal would also be contingent on Savvy’s planned $6 billion acquisition of Moonten, which is reportedly on hold until this merger is resolved. Recent leadership changes at Savvy, including the departure of CEO Brian Ward, add uncertainty to the timeline.
