SEC Faces Legal Test Over NFL Players in College

Legal battle over former NFL players in college football intensifies as Georgia AG threatens LSU expulsion

The update

A state judge is set to rule Thursday on whether former NFL players can suit up for LSU, as Georgia’s attorney general pushes SEC commissioner Greg Sankey to impose severe conference penalties. Chris Carr encouraged the SEC to use “all measures available” against LSU should the Tigers roster former NFL players, suggesting even suspending or removing the school from the conference.

Why it matters

This case represents an unprecedented challenge to the integrity of college athletics and the SEC’s authority. The outcome could reshape amateur sports by potentially allowing professional athletes to return to college competition, creating an uneven playing field and threatening the fundamental principles that distinguish college sports from professional leagues.

What to watch

Thursday’s ruling from Judge William Jorden in Baton Rouge will determine the immediate eligibility of several athletes, including Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, both of whom participated in NFL preseason games. The SEC has vowed to stand by its rule banning pro players from competing, while other conference schools have discussed harsh penalties including boycotts or expulsion of LSU.
