UN: Ebola Response Failing to Keep Pace with DRC Outbreak

The UN warns the Ebola outbreak in the DRC is growing exponentially, with the death toll exceeding 3,000, as relief efforts struggle to keep pace with the crisis.

The update

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is growing exponentially, and relief efforts are struggling to keep up. The United Nations’ Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, warned that the virus is moving faster than the response. The death toll has surpassed 3,000, and the outbreak is now the fastest-growing in history.

Why it matters

This is not merely a health emergency; it is a humanitarian crisis layered onto existing conflict and displacement in eastern DRC. The response is hampered by a severe funding gap of over $1 billion, which has forced the UN to allocate more than $57 million from its emergency fund. While Uganda recently declared an end to its own outbreak, the situation in DRC remains dire, with over 5,000 cases recorded in Ituri Province alone.

What to watch

Relief agencies are racing to close the funding gap and scale up contact tracing and isolation efforts. The WHO has emphasized that breaking every transmission chain is essential to stopping the spread. Additionally, the reopening of schools in affected areas raises questions about the safety of returning students and the effectiveness of current containment measures.
