Better and Coinbase Launch Bitcoin-Backed Mortgages
US homebuyers can pledge Bitcoin as collateral for a down payment without selling their holdings.

The Update
US homebuyers can now pledge Bitcoin as collateral for a down payment without selling their holdings. Better Mortgage and Coinbase announced the general availability of a Bitcoin-backed mortgage product on Wednesday. The loan pairs a Fannie Mae-backed home loan with a separate down payment loan secured by Bitcoin. Borrowers must pledge BTC worth at least 250% of the down payment loan, with the funds transferred to Better’s custodial account on Coinbase Prime. The two loans carry the same interest rate and amortization term and are repaid through a single monthly payment.
Why It Matters
This product bridges the gap between digital asset ownership and traditional real estate financing. It allows borrowers to leverage their crypto holdings for homeownership without liquidating their positions. The offering comes as the Federal Housing Finance Agency directed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to consider cryptocurrency in mortgage risk assessments, signaling a potential shift in how digital assets are viewed by major financial institutions.
What to Watch
Bitcoin price volatility could impact loan terms if the collateral value drops significantly. Borrowers must remain subject to Better’s standard credit and income underwriting requirements. The rebate for Coinbase One members is capped at $10,000. It remains unclear if this product is available nationwide or in specific states.
