Malaria outbreak at Frankfurt Airport kills 2 workers

Two Frankfurt Airport workers have died after contracting malaria from a mosquito believed to have arrived on a plane.

The update

The outbreak began in July when six employees at Germany’s busiest airport fell ill. Two have since died. Health officials say the infection was likely caused by a mosquito that hitched a ride on an incoming flight. The Robert Koch Institute identified the mosquito as an imported Anopheles species. The remaining four infected workers are currently hospitalized. Airport operators have deployed traps and sent captured mosquitoes to Belgium for genetic testing.

Why it matters

Malaria is rare in Germany, typically affecting only long-haul travelers. This outbreak highlights a critical vulnerability in global disease prevention: the ability of disease vectors to survive long-haul flights and establish themselves in new environments. The rarity of the disease also poses a diagnostic challenge, as local doctors may not immediately suspect it, delaying treatment.

What to watch

Authorities are analyzing the captured mosquitoes to determine the exact species and origin. It remains unclear if the infections were caused by a single mosquito or multiple carriers. The investigation will also look into whether the mosquitoes survived the journey and local conditions long enough to transmit the disease.
