El-Sayed distances himself from Piker over Israel comments

El-Sayed distances himself from Piker after the streamer suggested American Jews might face 'action' over their support for Israel.

The update

Democratic Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has publicly distanced his campaign from progressive Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. The move follows widespread criticism of remarks Piker made during a livestream last week.

Piker argued that the connection between Israel and Zionism expressed through Jewish institutions teaches people that Jews are a monolithic group. He suggested that this narrative could eventually lead to “someone’s going to come around and take action, not against the state of Israel, mind you, but against American Jews.”

In response, El-Sayed issued a statement affirming his commitment to Jewish safety and antisemitism as a “scourge.” He clarified that “nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokespeople.”

Why it matters

This friction highlights the internal divisions within the Democratic Party regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict. Piker’s rhetoric, which has previously drawn condemnation from the GOP Senate nominee, Mike Rogers, creates a political liability for El-Sayed.

El-Sayed’s pivot aims to reassure Jewish voters and moderates in a key state. His campaign is attempting to shift the focus of the race away from the streamer’s controversial comments and toward domestic policy issues like gas, groceries, and healthcare.

What to watch

El-Sayed’s ability to recover support among Jewish Democrats and suburban moderates in Michigan. The extent to which Piker’s supporters react to El-Sayed’s disavowal. The campaign’s messaging strategy as it moves toward the general election.
