Tech Giants Back DOE’s Scientific AI Mission

Microsoft commits $60M, Google $40M to DOE's Genesis Mission, aiming to double American scientific productivity within a decade through AI integration.

The update

Microsoft has announced a $60 million investment in the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, including $40 million in Azure compute and AI credits over three years, plus $20 million in solution engineering services. The tech giant is also launching SPARK (Scientific Partnership Advancing Research & Knowledge), a coordination hub to facilitate collaboration across the DOE’s 17 National Laboratories.

Separately, Google DeepMind has committed $40 million in AI tokens and cloud credits to support the mission, providing access to its frontier AI for science portfolio including AlphaFold 3, AlphaEvolve, and WeatherNext models.

Why it matters

The Genesis Mission aims to double American scientific productivity and impact within a decade by embedding AI directly into the scientific process. This represents a significant public-private partnership to maintain U.S. competitiveness in AI research and accelerate breakthroughs in areas from fusion energy to materials science.
