Robots Smash Bolt’s 100m Record

Humanoid robots have outpaced human sprinting records, signaling rapid advancements in bipedal robot technology.

The update

At the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, Chinese robots have surpassed Usain Bolt’s 2009 100-meter dash record. Tiangong Ultra completed the sprint in 9.39 seconds, followed by Honor’s Lightning robot at 9.47 seconds. The Tiangong Ultra also broke the 400-meter record with a time of 38.16 seconds. The event, now in its second year, features 2,056 robots from 16 countries competing in various categories including sprinting, jumping, football, and boxing.

Why it matters

This achievement demonstrates significant progress in humanoid robot capabilities, particularly in bipedal movement and speed. The improvement is dramatic compared to last year’s event, where Tiangong Ultra completed the 100-meter dash in 21.5 seconds. These developments highlight the accelerating pace of robotics technology and its potential to eventually surpass human capabilities in various physical tasks.

What to watch

How these robots will be adapted for practical applications beyond competitive events. Whether future iterations will be able to stop safely without crashing into barriers. The technological breakthroughs that enabled such rapid improvement in just one year.
