Anonymous Engagement (Views and Reactions)
Briefly Pulse uses a random first-party token stored in your browser to recognize repeat activity. The server issues this token in an HttpOnly cookie, so site JavaScript cannot read or create it. The server derives pseudonymous HMAC hashes using a WordPress salt; we do not store the token itself, raw IP addresses, or user-agent strings.
We use this limited engagement data to provide aggregate readership signals, prevent duplicate counting and abuse, and let readers use article reactions. A published article records at most one view per first-party token in a rolling 24-hour period. Editors, previews, recognized bots, synthetic monitoring, and cross-origin requests are excluded. Readers may keep one active reaction per article and may switch that selection.
Timestamped engagement events, hourly aggregate activity, view-deduplication records, and the pseudonymous record of an active reaction selection are retained for 35 days. Short-lived rate-limit records are retained for 2 hours. Automated cleanup runs in bounded batches, so deletion may have a brief processing lag. This feature is first-party only and is not used for cross-site tracking or to identify a person.
