Seven killed in Kenyan safari helicopter crash

A safari helicopter crash in northern Kenya has killed seven, including a Telemundo executive and Ecuador’s intelligence chief.

The update

A helicopter carrying tourists on a scenic flight crashed in a remote part of northern Kenya on Wednesday morning, killing all seven people on board. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority confirmed the incident occurred at approximately 9:13 a.m. local time while the aircraft was flying from the Loisaba Conservancy to the Ewaso Nyiro area in Samburu County. The helicopter, a Eurocopter EC130 B4 operated by Lady Lori Helicopters, was carrying six passengers and the pilot.

Why it matters

The death of Ecuador’s intelligence chief, Michele Sensi-Contugi, in this accident is a significant geopolitical development. As a senior official in the administration, his role in the country’s security crisis adds a layer of complexity to the tragedy. The crash also involves high-profile figures from the U.S. media landscape, including José Alberto Suárez, president and general manager of several Telemundo stations in Florida.

What to watch

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. While the rugged terrain of Mount Ololokwe is a known tourist destination, the specific factors leading to the accident remain unclear. The identities of the four other American victims have not yet been released.
