Estrogen Therapy Linked to Fewer Alzheimer’s Brain Changes

Study finds women who took estrogen-only therapy showed fewer Alzheimer's brain markers at autopsy, but doesn't prove prevention.

The update

New research published in Neurology reveals that women who used estrogen-only hormone therapy after menopause showed fewer signs of Alzheimer’s disease in their brains after death. The study analyzed data from over 21,000 women, finding that those who had used estrogen therapy had 35% lower odds of Alzheimer’s-related brain changes at autopsy, including amyloid plaques and tau tangles.

Why it matters

Women are about twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease as men. This research suggests estrogen therapy might help reduce some of the brain pathology associated with Alzheimer’s, though it doesn’t necessarily prevent the disease itself. The findings add important context to the ongoing debate about hormone therapy and brain health.

What to watch

Researchers emphasize these findings show association, not causation. The study focused only on estrogen-only therapy, not combination therapies. More research is needed to determine if these findings apply to current hormone therapy practices and whether the timing of treatment affects outcomes.
